Like any other other network device "adds onto your home network" either on a switch or router. Recommend router for streaming? Shoot everyone else? Shoot you? I use a higher end netgear router and it never screws up. You can use Wifi, but I've had issues even with my client being literally beside my router. Done streaming before and the only result i get it is very slow overall network and tried it with a variety of routers and switches. I suppose things will be different when you use server like software which is essentially what inhome streaming is or windows server.

steam link app slow connection

Even with a wired connection, it's almost unplayable at times. Reducing the display output to p helps, but the result is still extremely choppy. I've tried a multitude of settings on my TV including "game mode" to no avail. Using in home streaming on my laptop, even on wireless, is excellent. Showing 1 - 15 of 30 comments. I've got the same problem except my display latency hovers around 30 ms. I was originally on a power line connection then went to direct connection and all that changed was the input latency went from 2 ms to 1ms.

I noticed in games that don't tax my PC so much it streams pretty well and at good quality p 60fps, the display latency lag is unacceptable though. On more taxing games like fallout 4 where my PC struggles to get 40 fps the steam link will start to drastically degrade the quality of the video stream, and it's choppy. Games will run worse on the steam link vs no steam link because of all the extra processing power used to encode the stream, I'm guessing.

Windows 10 x64i5 K, GTX ti, 8gb slow ddr3. At all types of quality levels. Its still unplayable. PC has k, 16gb ddr3ti asus gigabit router all wired, cat-6 tried diff settings on router, changing QoS setitng and even tried disconnecting the Cloud drives and other PC so there was no other traffic my pc runs 4 monitors, i disabled the extras even changing the settings in Steam and in the Link to Performance.

I'm just returning it at this point. It's been such a hassle trying to get it to work these past few days, and I really was looking forward to it. I'm just gonna save up for a decent gaming HTPC at this point.

Streaming isn't going to work for me.

What are the specs? I'm going to hold onto it for a couple weeks to see if an update fixes it. If that doesn't happen I'll return it too. GTX is the minimum for hardware encoding. Gutbutton View Profile View Posts. I've been having great luck so far with mine. Have played Call Of Juarez and Spec ops the line max settings 60fps.

Haven't tried super intesive games yet.I seem to be getting a couple of seconds of lag every couple of minutes with the android app. I have noticed that every time the there is a lag spike there is a upload spike as well, this only happens when I am using the Steam Link app though. I believe I have your exact same issue.

I've tried the new Steam Link app for my Samsung S8 on the same 5ghz network and same distance away and I can barely play at the lowest bitrate setting 3mbps and its the only way I can get the screen to even show on my phone. Why would the stream bottleneck on the S8 but not on the steam link box? Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. All rights reserved. Want to join? First, install Steam on one of your PCs, launch it, and then sign in with your account.

You can also connect wireless devices to your Steam Link via Bluetooth later. The Steam Big Picture Mode interface appears and you can use it to launch and play games as if you were sitting in front of the PC. Many settings for customizing the Steam Link are only available on the main screen here. However, there are ways to minimize the latency and make the stream perform better. First, you should use a wired Ethernet connection for your Steam Link, if possible.

Connect the Steam Link to your router using an Ethernet cable. This is the single most important thing you can do to get good performance from your game streaming. Powerline networking may work better than wireless networking in some situations, but standard Ethernet cables are best. If you have a very old router and see bad performance with Ethernet, upgrading your router to something newer and faster may be the solution. A wireless connection will be a bit flakier and laggier than a wired connection, but it can still work.

It really depends on your overall setup and the games you play. The Steam Link supports Using a 5 GHz You can also tweak the streaming options on your PC. They should be by default. You can play with the other options here to see how they affect your setup. This thread on the Steam forums explains the difference in more detail. If you have a router with Quality of Servicealso known as network traffic prioritization, you should prioritize traffic to and from the Steam Link on the router.

This will ensure that the Steam Link can perform optimally. There are three options available here: Fast, Balanced, and Beautiful. The default is Balanced. If you have good performance, try selecting Beautiful and seeing if you get improved picture quality without a noticeable slowdown.

The usual tips for improving your performance and picture quality also help. You should also avoid using the PC for demanding applications while streaming from it, as that will reduce streaming performance. The Steam Link has a performance statistics overlay you can view.

Connect Steam Link Directly to PC - Windows 10 - Ethernet

The Steam Link can only launch games that are in your Steam library. It does support non-Steam games, but you have to add them to your Steam library first. You can then launch that game from the Steam Link.

Especially for more casual games, you might not even notice the difference. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere. But the app only recognizes that fact after a real streaming session, at wich time it does show the proper string "Good Connection". But even then any new attempt to use the network test will again give the false result "Slow Connection". So that test is simply not working right though it did seem to work in an earlier version. Test environment: I use 2 different Android devices in my tests, with identical results for the reported bug.

This is connected to my gaming PC through gigabit ethernet true gigabit ports at each end and in the interconnecting LAN switch. Obviously this does NOT give any 'slow' connection to the app. When using online connection speed tests from this device, the results are always above Mbps.

When using online connection speed tests from this tablet the results are usually around 95 Mbps. So here too any 'slow' test result would be quite weird Fortunately this bug has no effect at all on the actual streaming, so it is just misleading to users, some of whom may give up on streaming with this app when they see that "Slow Connection" result and its accompanying warning text.

Hopefully this bug will be fixed in some future update. Last edited by ra. Showing 1 - 3 of 3 comments. I get the slow result on ethernet aswell, hovever when i launche a game and return passes the test and is fast. JCA: Then your results are slightly different from mine. For me the app frequently shows "Good Connection" when launched, without making any test.

And it can also revert to that correct state after playing a game and having stopped the streaming. But in all cases where I perform the test, whether after a game or directly after app launch, the test always displays the result "Slow Connection".

This bug was not present in the earliest versions of the app that I tried, a few weeks ago, so something has gone wrong with the coding of that part since then.

Same here, but with one difference. Video still all fine as previous versions, but audio stream became bugged. Full of fast drops, fast silences, creep "crack-crack" like sounds. In that case, the problem is probably fixable. This will produce some numbers and graphs as you play that may help you diagnose your problem as you test and tweak.

If you experience occasional stuttering or dropouts, your connection may be to blame. Wireless can work, but there are a lot of factors that can affect performance.

Powerline adapters may be a decent substitutethough your mileage may vary depending on the wiring in your home. The defaults should be fine here in most cases. Even if the game is running smoothly on your host PC, having your graphics settings turned up too high could cause problems streaming—your PC may just be working too hard to process and stream your game. This is almost certainly a bug in Steambut one that has yet to be fixed. Some games may run better with one collection of settings, while others may run better with another.

The only way to truly find out is to do a little experimentation yourself. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere. Joinsubscribers and get a daily digest of news, comics, trivia, reviews, and more.

Hoping someone can help because I am completely stumped. When trying to stream on the same network from my host PC ethernet connection to iOS 5ghz connection across a mbs internet I always have problems with the app displaying slow connection. I never get anything above a fair connection. I have toggled all settings within the host and client and nothing seems to change it. When looking at the performance overlay I have huge spikes with the red line higher than cyan and blue.

I get drastic spikes in cyan.

I have the correct ports forwarded but there has to be something on my internet settings i'm missing. My specs and results below are crazy bad. Showing 1 - 5 of 5 comments.
